Advent – Come Lord Jesus.
Sermon Notes: Advent – Come Lord Jesus.
Advent: The Arrival of the King! The first coming of JESUS the King into our world! His incarnation in flesh! The birth of JESUS at Christmas!
Add a few letters to ADVENT and you get ADVENTURE! To venture by very nature is to RISK!
What a risk GOD took in sending, releasing His One, His only Son, and to come into our sin sick, sin broken world. Fully God, yet fully man, in that first coming of Christ the King, the Saviour.
1: We want to look back in celebration at His first coming, as He broke into Human History, the Saviour of the world.
2: We also want to look forward in this Advent season, we want a sense of anticipation and expectation and preparation.
Revelation 22:20, ‘and he who testifies to these things says: Yes, I am coming soon. Amen. Come Lord Jesus. Come Lord Jesus – come soon, come soon again to this world of ours!
In the Old Testament that Day of God’s coming is called the ‘Day of the LORD’. The people of God in the Old Testament, looked forward to this glorious Day of the LORD, Amos 5:18. They were sure that God would come in Christ, and rescue them, redeem them.
In the New Testament, the Second Advent, the coming again of our Lord Jesus Christ, to judge the world, before whom we all will stand and give an account of how we have lived, behaved, loved and served Jesus.
And we need to see these days in which we’re living – Christmas Days – December Days, as preparation Days. Days that we want to use to prepare ourselves, because we believe – JESUS IS COMING AGAIN! Titus 3:3, ‘’at one time we too were foolish, and deceived, but let’s put that behind us. For we have been rescued and redeemed by Jesus, and we’re getting ready to meet him.’ V8, ‘I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in Christ, may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good.’ To live in a way that is a godly way in our everyday lives. Wherever you live this week, live it in preparing for Christ to come again, because who knows, He may come soon!
Matthew 24:3-9 3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumours of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.
9 “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.
And at that time what will happen? Many people, who used to follow Jesus, will turn away from following Him. The love of most Christians will grow cold, (which is frightening). There will be a drop in spiritual temperature in the hearts and lives of Christians.
Are you determined to keep on following Jesus, keep on keeping on, to the end, until Jesus returns at His Second Coming as Judge and King.
But this Gospel must be preached to the whole world as a testimony to all nations. And what will happen?
The end will come, and Christ will break through the Heaven’s and step onto the earth.
Will we be part of the answer to what we pray when we say: ‘Your Kingdom come?’ Come Lord Jesus!
