Ten Commandments. - You shall not commit adultry

Sermon Notes: Ten Commandments. No7

You shall not commit adultery’ Exodus 20:4

God is saying a strong NO to adultery because He is saying a strong YES to the exclusiveness, specialness, sacredness, preciousness of marriage.

  • Nothing destroys marriages like adultery.
  • Nothing shatters lives like adultery.
  • Nothing breaks hearts like adultery.

1: Make a commitment to live by God’s way. ‘How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to Your word.’ Psalm 119:9

2: Remind yourself of the devastation and the pain that comes with adultery for a family. ‘the man who commits adultery is an utter fool, for he destroys his own soul.’ Proverbs 6:32

3: Work hard at growing, deepening, strengthening and enjoying your own marriage. ‘Be faithful to your own wife. Give your love to her alone.’ Proverbs 15:5

4: Guard your mind and be careful about the things that you allow yourself to watch and see. ‘But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.’ Matthew 5:28

‘I will lead a life of integrity in my own home. I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar.’ Psalm 101:2-3

5: Be careful and be wise in all of your relationships. ‘If you think you are standing strong, be careful, for you too may fall into the same sin.’ 1 Corinthians 10:12

How do you recover if you have sinned sexually in thought or in action?

1: Acknowledge that adultery is a sin and nothing less than a sin and break with it now!

‘Against you and you only have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight.’ Psalm 51:4 (David recovering from adultery)

2: Break all contact with the other person and if you have a close friend you can trust and who will stand with you, to do this, then ask for their help.

3: Ask for, believe and receive God’s forgiveness because the death of Jesus is powerful enough to wash you clean from every sin.

‘Finally I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide them. I said to myself, ‘I will confess my rebellion to the Lord’. And you forgave me. All my guilt is gone.’ Psalm 32:5

‘No matter how deep the stains of your sins, I can remove it. I can make you as clean as freshly fallen snow.’ Isaiah 1:18.
