John Chapter 4:4-26.

Sermon Notes – John Chapter 4:4-26.

Imagine if JESUS was waiting here in St. Paul’s just to speak to you….What kind of ‘aches’ and ‘longings’ would He find in your heart today?

  • Look at how JESUS loves and cares deeply for this woman.
  • Look at how JESUS is lovingly pursuing this woman.
  • Look at how JESUS looks underneath the surface and sees into her aching heart.
  • Look at how JESUS speaks to her with such tenderness, such respect, and such care.

1: Don’t you just love the way that JESUS breaks through every barrier and pursues this lost and lonely woman to draw her to Himself?

I don’t think it was an accident that we find JESUS at this well, which was about half a mile outside the town of Sychar, verse 4. This is what we call today a Divine appointment – a GOD moment.

And to reach this woman – Jesus has to break through HUGE culture barriers, religious barriers and gender barriers. Good Jews reading this story would be absolutely horrified by JESUS speaking to this woman. His own disciples are shocked that He is speaking publically with this woman, verse 27.

This woman is lonely, and she is lost, but the GOD of Heaven is going to break into her life this day. She doesn’t realise it – BUT she is loved by the Saviour of the World, who is waiting lovingly at the well to meet her – to speak to her – to satisfy the deepest longings and thirst – the ache in her soul.

Who do you rub shoulders with? Who do you know that you think ‘aren’t’ the type to be interested in GOD? Maybe if GOD is going to work in their hearts – He is first going to have to change our attitudes. Will you let HIM change YOU so that He can then use you to change them?

2: Don’t you just love the way JESUS breaks through this woman’s shame and pain to love her without any conditions? V15-26.

This woman’s heart aches for love, for acceptance and genuine affection. All our hearts do.

It can be easy for Christians to be critical and judgemental of people’s lifestyles, without ever really getting close enough to people to see the struggles underneath the surface, to feel their shame and pain, to hear their ache for true love and acceptance and affection. Only GOD can satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts.

How many people feel – I’m Not ‘good enough’ to become a Christian. ‘God wouldn’t want me…look how I’ve messed up’

‘I could never become a Christian…with my past, my pain, my broken relationships, my broken heart.

WRONG – Totally Wrong – There is None of us ‘too good’ and there is none of us ‘too bad’.

Do you believe that there is HOPE for you and also for people You know and rub shoulders with?

Will you love people the way that GOD loves people unconditionally, so they may come to know Jesus as Saviour and LORD?

3: Don’t you just love the way this woman is so excited to tell others the incredible HOPE that JESUS has brought into her life as her Saviour. V27-29 and 39-42.

Isn’t it interesting that when JESUS wants to reach this village, He doesn’t go into the centre of the town and start preaching to crowds? Instead He reaches and He saves one person and then she goes and she tells everyone of the remarkable Saviour she has found. They get curious and come to see JESUS for themselves and they become followers of JESUS too. V39-42.

Our heart and passion is to see our area totally transformed by meeting the Saviour – individuals – whole families – work places and spaces – totally changed – one life at a time. Who could you reach and share with this week, for JESUS?
